BEHIND THE SCIENCE

AI Policy

Fun Science Project Ideas may use artificial intelligence to support research preparation, writing, editing, illustration, and technical development. This policy sets the standards for that use across our educational content and project resources. Responsibility for what we publish remains with the people making editorial decisions.

Our purpose is to help readers explore science through clear explanations and practical activities. AI assistance must support that purpose while preserving accuracy, transparency, responsible project planning, and honest reporting.

AI tools may help suggest topics, organize outlines, clarify wording, or prepare initial drafts. They may also assist with formatting worksheets, developing website features, and identifying questions for further investigation. These outputs are starting points for review.

Human review is required before publication. AI-generated content can contain inaccuracies and unsupported claims. Review must address scientific concepts, measurements, units, calculations, materials, instructions, and suitability for the intended audience. AI output alone is insufficient evidence for a factual claim. developers.google.com

References suggested by AI must be checked against the actual source. A publication, quotation, link, or scientific finding must not be included merely because a tool presents it confidently. Sources should support the specific statements attributed to them, and adaptations of existing activities should receive appropriate acknowledgment.

AI-generated instructions do not establish that a project works or is suitable for children. Proposed procedures require assessment of materials, steps, equipment, foreseeable hazards, cleanup, and supervision. Changes to quantities, substances, temperatures, or equipment require renewed consideration.

Scientific review and hands-on testing are different activities. AI assistance cannot substitute for either. Descriptions such as “tested,” “verified,” or “reviewed by a scientist” must accurately reflect the work completed and the qualifications of the person involved. An AI tool must never be credited as a scientific reviewer or presented as someone who performed an experiment.

Experiment results must be reported honestly. AI must not be used to invent observations, measurements, photographs, testing records, or accounts of firsthand experience. Hypothetical examples and sample data may explain a calculation or graph, but they must be clearly labeled. Simulated outputs must remain distinguishable from physical measurements.

AI-generated or substantially AI-altered images require similar care. Illustrations may explain a concept or support a page’s design, but they must not be presented as photographs of an experiment that took place. Relevant captions should identify generated material and clarify its purpose. Diagrams require checks for scientific accuracy, labels, proportions, and consistency with the instructions.

Meaningful AI assistance should be disclosed. When AI substantially shapes published text, imagery, or another resource in a way that matters to the reader’s interpretation, an appropriate notice is required. Routine spelling, grammar, or formatting assistance does not ordinarily require an individual disclosure. Notices must accurately describe the assistance without implying testing or specialist review.

Personal information must be handled carefully. Our editorial standards prohibit entering children’s personal information, identifiable student work, private correspondence, or confidential submissions into external AI tools without an appropriate basis and permission where required. Reader feedback used for editorial assistance should be minimized and de-identified. External providers’ retention, confidentiality, and training practices require separate assessment.

Students should follow their teacher’s and science fair’s rules on AI use. AI assistance must not replace required observations, fabricate data, or misrepresent authorship. Parents and teachers should guide age-appropriate use of external services and review their requirements before a child uses them.

If an AI-powered reader feature is introduced, its purpose, limitations, and relevant data handling must be explained before use. Automated recommendations must not be presented as personalized safety approval.

We welcome reports of inaccurate explanations, misleading images, unsupported references, or unclear disclosures through our Contact page. Please include the page address and the material concerned. We may revise or remove affected content after assessment and update this policy as our practices change.
